A model who was left with horrific injuries to her face and neck in an acid attack as she celebrated her 21st birthday has shared photographs of her remarkable recovery.
Resham Khan, 21, and her cousin Jameel Muhktar were attacked while sitting in a car at traffic lights with their windows opened in Beckton, East London, earlier this year.
Three months on from the horrific attack Miss Khan has shared pictures of herself with no visible scarring to one side.
The business management student told her 16,000 followers on Twitter yesterday: ‘Of course my face isn’t what it was, the images show mainly one side.’
Miss Khan then added: ‘You’re all actually making me so emotional. Thank you all so much. I feel so lucky to be surrounded by so much positivity.’
Social media users praised her bravery for sharing the photos on Twitter.
Emma Hiley said: ‘Wow, you are so beautiful! So glad you have made a full recovery. Such an inspiration.’
The horrific attack took place on 21 June as Resham and her cousin Mr Muhktar waited at traffic lights in East London.
As they waited for the lights to change a man threw acid through the open window and into Miss Khan’s face before going round to the driver’s side and throwing more acid at Mr Muhktar.
Mr Muhktar tried to drive away from their attacker but crashed the car when the ‘pain took over’.
Both Miss Khan and Mr Muhktar were forced to strip naked on the A13 to help ease the pain as they begged passersby for water.
Miss Khan, a Business Management student, said she watched her clothes burn away as she struggled with the ‘excruciating’ pain.
She had said after the attack: ‘The pain was excruciating. I was struggling to close the window. My cousin struggled to get us away. I saw my clothes burn away in front of me. He put his foot down as we were coming onto a dual carriageway but the pain took over and we crashed.
‘We stripped off in the middle of the road, running around screaming and begging for water. We did this for 45 minutes. Someone drove my naked cousin and me to the local hospital, and we were seen to. We have since been transferred to a specialist unit.’
Mr Muhktar was put into induced coma while Miss Khan was given a skin graft.
During an emotional interview with Channel 4 News Mr Muhktar said he believed the incident was a ‘hate crime’ and could be linked to ‘Islamophobia’.
He went on to say: ‘I honestly feel that if this was a white person attacked by an Asian, he would be caught within 24 hours and it’d be all over the news.’
‘Maybe he’s got it in for Muslims because of the things that have been going on lately. I don’t know if people are trying to retaliate. We’re innocent people.
‘We didn’t deserve that. I’ve never seen this guy in my life. I don’t have any problems with anybody. My cousin is 21, she’s a business student. Why would anyone do that to us?’
John Tomlin, 24, of Colman Road, Canning Town, was charged after handing himself into a police station and faces two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent.
