A man has been jailed for life after he murdered his wife with a hammer when she refused to make him dinner and told him “Do it yourself Monkey.”

52-year-old Jamal Khan lost his temper and attacked his wife, Humera Khan, 42, with a hammer as she sewed clothes at their home in Preston, Lancashire, in February.

The mother-of-three was struck twice around the head and suffered catastrophic injuries including a severe skull fractures and brain injuries after the attack and died later in hospital.

Khan, of Chatsworth Street, Preston, was initially arrested on suspicion of wounding, but was later rearrested on suspicion of murder following his wife’s death.

Khan told jurors the incident happened after he had asked her if she had prepared some food for him, to which she had replied in their native tongue: ” Do it yourself Monkey.”

He described it as “grievously insulting”.

He also claimed his wife had stood up causing the hammer to hit her.

He said: “I just like, tried to scare her, saying ‘Do you want me to use this on you then?’, and I was just like not trying to hit her or anything.

“In the meanwhile she just stood up and it hit her right on the head.”

Khan was found guilty after a week-long trial at Preston Crown Court over the fatal attack on February 15, 2017.

Lancashire Police’s Det Chief Insp Claire McEnery said: “This is a tragic case where Humera suffered a fatal head injury at the hands of her husband.

“It was a ferocious attack where she was bludgeoned to death with a lump hammer, causing catastrophic injuries to her as she was working on a sewing machine in her own house, a place where she was entitled to feel safe and secure.”
